COVID-19 case numbers are continuing to grow, which is why it’s essential that you know the most important information regarding the virus, including how an urgent care center can help you with getting either a COVID-19 test or a COVID-19 antigen test.
What is COVID-19 and How Does it Spread?
COVID-19 is an illness caused by a virus that’s spread from person to person. This virus has spread throughout the world and become a global pandemic. Symptoms can range from mild to severe illness, depending on the person afflicted with the disease.
You can become infected with COVID-19 by coming into close contact (i.e., within six feet) with a person who has the disease. People can become infected from respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Infection can also spread by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, and then by touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
Protect Yourself and Others
Currently, there isn’t a vaccine for COVID-19 but you can take a Covid-19 test or Covid-19 antigen test. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Stay home as much as possible, and avoid close contact with those outside your household. If you do go outside or to an urgent care center, wear a cloth face mask that covers your nose and mouth. Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces in your household, and wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds on a regular basis. If no soap and water are available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Social Distancing
Social distancing, which means staying at least six feet apart from people outside your household, is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To further reduce your distance from people, buy groceries and medicine online, if possible, so you don’t have to leave your house more than necessary. The same goes for banking and your doctor. If you can do it online, that should be your first choice. Getting deliveries and food takeout helps limit in-person contact as much as possible so you don’t have to visit an urgent care center.
Prevent the Spread
If you’re sick with COVID-19, stay home, unless medical care is necessary. Avoid public transportation, such as ride-sharing, buses, taxis, or the subway. Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home to avoid infecting them. If necessary, seek medical care to provide relief for your symptoms. Make sure to call ahead if you’re going to get medical attention.
Know Your Risk
Everyone is at risk of getting the virus. However, some people are at a higher risk. Older adults and those who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at a higher risk for more severe illness if they contract the virus.
